💜Snippets💜 - If Not Today, Then Tomorrow

If Not Today, Then Tomorrow

"Come on! Just a little faster?!!" She pressed on, not even bothering to wipe the shining beads of sweat above her brow.

"You're not gonna make it", he said in a matter-of-fact tone. "Why don't you give up and accept the fact that you were gonna lose anyway. I might be lenient if you do that."

But she wasn't listening this time. She pressed harder, hoping it would make all the difference. Narrowing her eyes, she channeled all of her thoughts. Not wanting to admit defeat at the hands of her older brother, her defiance brought out the streak of raging fire in her eyes.

"Alright, alright", he said in a panicky voice, "I'm not against you winning or anything, I'm just stating the obvious."

"Come on, come on", she whispered desperately, "You can't fail me now!"

But there it was, the words written brightly across the screen. She didn't even need to look at it to know what it said. It happened in all over again, like a car crash in slow-motion. The exhaustion over-powered her and all she could hear was her brother's impish glee as she collapsed on the bed.

"You lost", he stated.

"I know", she grumbled.

A strained spark of energy passed through her as she sat up and narrowed her eyes, "I won't let you win tomorrow. Not unless I stop trying, which I never will. If not today, then tomorrow. For sure."

He looked at her and rolled his eyes. "That's what you always say. But hey, you've gotten much better at it."

The door creaked slightly as their parents walked by.

"They've been racing again haven't they?"

"Eyes glued to the screen, they really seem intent on breaking their gamepads. I don't know what is with that car racing game, but neither of them seem to give the other a rest over it."

And hearing these words, the children laughed contentedly. Their 'little war' would commence once again the next day.
