The Birthday Bash

Midilsi stood in the patch of pretty tulips, holding her little sister Lily's hand. Being midday, it was partly sunny, the sun being hidden from view by white, skittish clouds, all the while threatening to break free; there were no signs of any other life form. At least, that's what she thought. Lily was a little girl, she was just four-years-old. She looked about and her face clearly showed signs of dejection. Just as they were about to turn around and leave, Midilsi heard a familiar chirp. "Mabelle", she cried out, "you made it!!" The little robin fluttered into Midilsi's open palm and nudged her as Lily admired its warm colors.

Not far away, Kirla the wolf, Joja the owl (who somehow managed to stay awake), and Zak the bear were planning an exquisite surprise along with Daya. Now, Daya wasn't an ordinary teenager, she could communicate fluently with any sort of animal (except magical beasts with whom she had a bit of trouble) and she was the main advocate of nature. Daya and Midilsi had been BFFs for years and today was Lily's birthday.

Mabelle (pronounced May-bell) flew into the sky and fluttered to and fro, as if motioning for the girls to follow. Lily tugged her sister's hand and skipped after Mabelle.

On the other side of the patch, Daya and her buddies hid behind a rock, and as soon as Midilsi and Lily were in range, jumped up and shouted, "Happy Birthday Lily!!" At least, that's what they heard from Daya. Joja flapped her wings, Kirla howled excitedly, and Zak patted Lily's head affectionately with a padded paw. Needless to say, it was quite the welcome. Without further ado, Daya ushered Midilsi and Lily onto Zak's back and then climbed onto him herself. While Joja and Kirla raced ahead, Midilsi and Daya spent the time catching up as Zak lumbered on, Lily pulling his furry ears out of curiosity every once in a while. It was almost sunset when they reached the entrance of the cozy cave, now covered in neon lights, balloons and party posters. In the middle of it all, stood an exotic bonsai tree that hosted a marvelous cake. Many other species of animals were clustered in the cave, all of whom were very close to Daya. It was quite a bash. Lily giggled a lot as she went around the cave and petted almost every creature she saw. They ate heartily and headed outside. Midilsi, Lily and Daya watched day turn into night and kept close to the warmth of the bonfire as billions of tiny fireflies rose into the night-sky to put on a spectacular show. Even Xiang the dragon made it in time to throw off some fireworks! Sleepy from a day of elaborate planning, they closed their eyes and lay underneath the starry sky, welcoming the end of the festive party.

As she read the last entry that was made over six years ago by her elder sister Midilsi, Lily placed her glasses aside, rubbed her temples, leaned back in her seat and took a sip of her strawberry milkshake, wondering about the next clue and silently vouching to find her lost sister.
