 The Last Step

Only a few more steps she convincingly told her aching body. She saw the sky above and the clouds below her. She was almost there. She ecstatically thought about the new day that was quickly approaching. Keep moving, her partner warned her. He was right. She shuddered at the very thought of having cold feet again. She padded on. After a long journey, here she was, climbing one of the world's tallest summits and soon, she would make her mark at the very beginning of the new day. The air around her was cold and fresh. Her eyes shone like stars in the darkness. She couldn't wait any longer, her dream was finally coming true. The last step she took was exhilarating! She helped her partner up and placed the jewel-studded chest she had been carrying, deep in the snow. Inside the chest were two pieces of paper. One was her 8th grade essay on her dream to climb the world's tallest peak and the other was a little prayer to God. They both sat down and watched for hours as the shadow covered peaks slowly turned pink and then white as the sun's golden aura seeped into the seemingly never-ending blanket of soft, white snow. She calmly breathed the sight in with all of its celestial beauty. The moment was truly euphoric. Having come up so far, she never wanted to go back down.
